The European Commission Approved the Project for Construction of the North Speed Tangent on Operational Program Regional Development 2007-2013
The project „North Speed Tangent from km 0+000 to km 16+540”, on Operational Program Regional Development 2007 – 2013 was approved by a Resolution of the European Commission on 4 June 2014. The Project will be financed under the scheme „Support for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Second and Third Class Roads”.
The total length of North Speed Tangent will be 16,54 km. The road project is of significance for the City of Sofia and the country, as Trakia, Hemus and Lyulin motorways as well as the road Sofia – Kalotina intersect within the project.
It will provide connection between several corridors – IV, VIII and X, serving the traffic from and to Greece, Romania, the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia.
The construction of North Speed Tangent will assure convenient connection between the end north-western and south-eastern districts of Sofia. It is expected that the access of the most remote districts to the center of the capital will be improved with the new 6-lane road, that the traffic will be facilitated and that the time for traveling will be shortened. With the construction of the 16-kilometer section the road traffic will be uniformly distributed between the new route and Sofia Ring Road.
The amount of the grant, approved by the European Commission, is 120 151 948 Euro, 85% of them being cо-financing by the European Regional Development Fund and 15% - by the national budget.
