Zapadna_Daga_1.jpgNearly BGN 48 million were invested in the construction of section 1 of the Western Arc of Sofia Ring Road which is between the road junction of Lyulin motorway and Sofia Ring Road and the bridge over the Kakach River. Today section 1 – Road ІІ-18 from km 59+400 to km 61+629 and from km 0+000 to km 0+780 was officially inaugurated. The Project is cо-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union and the national budget through Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013.

With the construction of this section of the Ring Road and of the next one – from the bridge over the Kakach River to the road junction with the Northern Speed Tangent, which should be ready in a few months, it will be possible to get from Vrajdebna to the housing estate of Lyulin for about 15 minutes, and not as it was up to now – for about an hour – an hour and a half, the Chairman of the Management Board of Road Infrastructure Agency, eng. Lazar Lazarov said and indicated that Sofia will have quite another look with the new road thoroughfares. Eng. Lazarov handed over to the Deputy Mayor of Sofia, Lyubomir Hristov, a copy of the Permit for Use of the Road and wished that the new section should be maintained in a perfect condition and that it should always look as it looks today. According to a Protocol of Agreement signed between Road Infrastructure Agency and Sofia Municipality this section of the Ring Road will be maintained by the Municipality.

For the enhancement of the safety of the traffic and the facilitation of the traffic travelling to Lyulin Motorway and Border Control Checkpoint Kalotina, on 22 October this year the traffic was commissioned along the 3-kilometer direct route of the section and road junction Slivnitsa, and the roads for access to the direct route remained for completion. The work on them was completed and the official inauguration of the Project was made today as the requirements for the projects implemented with means from the funds of the European Union are. As the Ring Road is the main road thoroughfare not only for the capital, but it also serves the international traffic, the Project was implemented without suspension of the traffic but solely with its partial limitation. Each completed section and structure were promptly commissioned for traffic.

The total length of section 1 of the Western Arc of Sofia Ring Road is 3 km. It starts from the beginning of Lyulin motorway and ends after the bridge over the Kakach River. There are two road junctions in the section at Tsaritsa Yoanna Blvd. and Slivnitsa Blvd. and two bridges. Road junction Slivnitsa is at three levels and is the only similar structure in Sofia at the moment. The first level is below the level of the existing crossroads. The transit traffic along Sofia Ring Road in the direction north – south passes along it. The second is at the level of the terrain and is a roundabout with two arc-shaped bridges over Sofia Ring Road. The traffic on it is rе-distributed into four directions – to Kalotina, to the north, to the housing estate of Lyulin and to Lyulin motorway. The third level is a scaffold bridge above the level of the present crossroads. The transit flow for Border Control Checkpoint Kalotina passes along it. The structure was designed and built up in conformity with the Topdown method – from the top downwards, to provide for passing of motor vehicles during the construction. The unimpeded passing through the road connection is provided by its construction, the international and domestic traffic is facilitated and the safety in traveling is enhanced.

The other road junction Tsaritsa Yoanna is at two levels – at the connection of Tsaritsa Yoanna Blvd. with the Ring Road.

The Contractor of the construction and assembly works of Section 1 is Association Trace SOP DZZD (Company under the Obligations and Contracts Act). The value of the Construction Contract is BGN 47 820 000 inclusive of VAT. The construction supervision was exercised by DZZD Association Patconsult 2000-Tri Es. Their Contract is for BGN 1 171 800 inclusive of VAT.
