P5284261.JPGThe new 34-kilometer section Dimitrovgrad – Harmanli of Maritza motorway is opened to traffic from today. The construction of Lot 2 – from km 36+400 to km 70+620 cо-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union and the national budget with funds from Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013 was completed.

The total length of the section is 34,22 km. The route is on the territory of the region of Haskovo and passes through the municipalities of Dimitrovgrad, Haskovo, Simeonovgrad and Harmanli. The biggest road junction in Southern Bulgaria has been built on Lot 2 – road junction Dimitrovgrad. The intersection of the motorway with international road Е-85 (І-5) Dimitrovgrad – Haskovo will be implemented on two levels in a conflict-free manner. The structure is with 4 spans and is of full clover-leaf crossing type.

The safe connection with the main road thoroughfares within the region is achieved through another two road junctions. The communication with road III-503 Simeonovgrad – Harmanli is provided at road junction Sineonovgrad and with road II-76 Topolovgrad – Harmanli – at road junction Topolovgrad. The three road junctions are with LED lighting, consuming 3 times less electric energy. In this manner drivers will have better visibility when traveling during the night. The horizontal marking placed along the entire section is with light reflecting pearls for the enhancement of the traffic safety.

There are 27 large structures in total on Lot 2 – a bridge was built over the Harmanliyska River with length of 130 m, 4 overpasses, 3 subways, an overpass above the railway line Plovdiv - Svilengrad, a subway of the railway line Dimitrovgrad – Uzundzhovo, subways under agricultural roads, parking lots, recreation sites and so on.

CONSORTIUM MARITSA HIGHWAY is the Contractor of Lot 2. The value of the Contract for construction and assembly works is BGN 146 564 400 inclusive of VAT. The construction supervision is exercised by DZZD (Company under the Obligations and Contracts Act) „RUTEX – ЕТЕ”. Their Contract is for BGN 799 200 inclusive of VAT. The field supervision is exercised by Patproekt EOOD (LTD). Their Contract is for BGN 112 800 inclusive of VAT.

It is expected by commissioning of Lot 2 Dimitrovgrad – Harmanli that the average traffic during the day and the night along the section should increase from about 7 207 motor vehicles in 2015 to 8 134 motor vehicles in 2020, which constitutes a growth of about 13%. Noise protective walls were placed for the limitation of the impact of the high levels of noise from the intensive traffic along the route of the motorway in the proximity of the villages of Polyanovo, Aleksandrovo and the town of Harmanli. The protective fencing – from km 68+070 to km 68+586, is in the immediate proximity of auxiliary school Pencho R. Slaveykov in Harmanli.

Maritza motorway is a part of Pan-European Transport Corridor No IV and of Trans-European North-South Motorway. It will connect Trakia motorway at road junction Orizovo with Kapitan Andreevo at the Bulgarian-Turkish border. Maritsa motorway is the main route of traffic in the direction of Plovdiv – Border Control Checkpoint Kapitan Andreevo.

Construction of Maritza motorway Lot 1 and Lot 2 Project is cо-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union and the national budget under Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013. A total of 65,62 km financed by the Operational Programme are under construction. The construction and assembly works on Lot 1 Orizovo – Dimitrovgrad from km 5+000 to km 36+400 will be completed by the end of October this year. The total length of this section is 31,4 km.
