13 km of Northern Speed Tangent Are Open for Traffic
The traffic along a 13-kilometer section of the Northern Speed Tangent is launched today. These are the sections between Botevgradsko Shose and Lazar Mihaylov Blvd. and from the Ring Road to the road for Trebich. The total length of the tangent is 16,54 km. The Project is Lot 70 from Operational Programme Regional Development 2007-2013 which is cо-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the national budget.
The Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, the Ministers Lilyana Pavlova and Ivaylo Moskovski, the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, the Chairman of the Management Board of the Road Infrastructure Agency, eng. Lazar Lazarov and others attended the blessing with holy water for health and flawless traveling along the new road section ceremony served by Bishop Grigoriy Branitski.
The Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova expressed gratitude to all the institutions, the builders and the supervision for the efforts made and for the 24-hour work done during the last few days and weeks so that the Project could be implemented and be a fact. We did the impossible for five months. Five months ago we were here in a bare field and now we have a 13,5 km section, fully ready and completed with Act 16 and a Permit for Use. All the conditions of the Project were satisfied though no one believed that we will manage, Minister Pavlova emphasized. Thanks to the efforts and the large-scale work BGN 180 million were saved under Operational Regional Development Programme 2007-2013 for the Project. She indicated that at the beginning of next year the construction activities along a section of about 3 km of the tangent, which is completed in its essential part, will be finished. According to her, the Northern Speed Tangent will contribute to the development of this part of the capital because the new roads always bring business and investments, development of the economy and this means more workplaces and progress.
15 big-sized structures are built up in the ready-made sections – from km 0+000 to km 2+600 and from km 5+687 to km 16+540:
- 4 bridges over the rivers Kakach, Vladayska, Perlovska and Iskar;
- 5 overpasses over the Northern Speed Tangent (NST) in: Lazar Mihaylov Blvd., Chepinsko Shose Street, a street at km 9+671.61, road junction „Eastern Tangent”, km 12+640 on the road to the landfill;
- 3 overpasses in NST over: Chelopeshko Shose Blvd., a street at km 14+580, Botevgradsko Shose Blvd.;
- 3 subways at km 2+180, 6+219 and 6+640
A section of about 3 km remains for final completion at the Project – from the road for Trebich to Lazar Mihaylov Blvd., in which there are 7 big-sized facilities:
- 2 overpasses over Rojen Blvd. and NST at road junction Iliensko Shose;
- 1 scaffold bridge over Ilientsi Station;
- 4 subways at km 2+880, km 3+321, km 3+887 Nauka Street and km 4+090
Aimed at the commissioning of the traffic along the entire route, the overpass over Rojen Blvd. and the two subways at km 2+880 and at km 3+321 should be finally completed.
A convenient connection between the northwestern and southeastern district of Sofia is provided with the construction of the Northern Speed Tangent. It is expected that with the new route the access of the remotest districts to the center of the capital will be improved, the traffic will be facilitated and the time for traveling will be shortened. The new road section is with 6 traffic lanes, 3 in one direction each and will contribute to the alleviation of the traffic through rе-distribution of the traffic load from the center of Sofia and Sofia Ring Road.
The tangent is not a part of the Trans-European corridors, but it realized an important, fast and direct connection between the main road directions concentrated within the district. These are corridors IV, VIII and X of the Trans-European Transport Network through which the traffic from and for Greece, Romania, the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia passes. The infrastructural Project is of significance for Sofia and the country as the traffic from motorways Trakia and Hemus, road I-8 Kalotina – Sofia, I-6 Sofia – Burgas, second- and third-class roads of the national road network also gets included in the flow of motor vehicles along Sofia Ring Road of.
The Northern Speed Tangent passes through the lands of the districts of Trebich, Iliyantsi, Benkovski, Malashevtsi, Orlandovtsi and Vrazhdebna. There are 22 big-sized structures in the project, 5 road junctions: two diamonds – road junction Rojen and road junction Chepinsko Shose; two full clover-leaf crossings: road junction Iliyantsi and road junction Eastern Tangent and two road connections of the existing full clover-leaf crossing of road junction Sofia Ring Road – Hemus motorway. The route passes over the rivers Kakach, Vladayska, Perlovska and Iskar, crosses 20 electric power lines and gas pipelines and 20 water supply and sewerage networks. The longest structure on the Project is the bridge over the Perlovska River – 392 m.
